Лири жил там в изгнании, будучи выброшенным властями из США. Было решено записать концептуальный альбом на основе теории Лири о 7 уровнях человеческого сознания. Группа сделала грубую партитуру, и затем поехала в Берн (Лири было отклонено в виде на жительство в Берлине), что бы записать альбом. Несколько разумно причудливых гостей также приняли участие в студийных записях. Альбом Seven Up - тот, без которого «кислотные головы» не могут жить. Действительно, много людей считают его, как их лучший альбом (я так не считаю). Seven Up, конечно, их самый психоделический альбом! Ash Ra Tempel are a German Krautrock group of the 1970s, and are an example of cosmic or space rock. The band are perhaps best remembered for their songs being without lyrics. Instead of writing English lyrics, since German language was not popular in rock music at the time, Ash Ra Tempel more or less decided not to have lyrics in their songs. 'Seven-Up' is a difficult album to love musically. The range of styles involved is huge. Some parts are ambient and serene, yet elsewhere it sounds like punk, which is quite an achievement for 1972. This does mean, however, that its overall personality is very schizophrenic. Those involved speak of the great time they had recording it, or their intellectual satisfaction with what they got across, but no-one claims that they still listen to it. Barritt says that it is only suitable for listening to in the 45 minutes between dropping a tab of acid and the drug kicking in, just as you'd look at a road map before a car journey to give you an idea of where you were headed. But it terms of it's ambition, and the circumstances of it's creation, then it is hard to deny that Seven-Up is a remarkable record. In many ways it represents the pinnacle of sixties idealism. Kaiser, Enke and Leary believed that it was possible to make a record that, if not quite intended to take you to Heaven, would at least serve as a map to the car park next to the Pearly Gates. It is hard to imagine any contemporary artists operating at the same level of arrogance and ambition. Musicians may never get quite that high again.
