Recorded in a single March evening, it is as pure and honest as music gets. The songs are regretful of the bad times, hopeful of times to come, and respectful of the great power that causes all thing to be. Reflecting a lifetime spent with the echoes of Dylan, Young, Petty, Springsteen and Van Zandt, A Great River draws from the rich musical history of America and the melancholy of Appalachia, and harnesses the "electric vacuum roar" of guitar slingers past and present. With A Great River, his first solo outing, Nate Hall has offered up one of the most emotionally draining and honest records so far this year. A mixture of echo-drenched electric guitars and mournful acoustic weave a tapestry of forlorn, melancholic American folk music that reaches right down into the soul as Nate's rich, deep voice recites his lamentations. The vast sadness captured is almost overwhelming, a sense of despair too deep that you just want to curl up in a corner and cry. A Great River is sparse, raw, spur of the moment sketches, the sound of a man laying bare his fears and hopes in the old American way. This is not some meticulously planned record where every note is placed to perfection but a rough and genuine expression of his deepest thoughts and feelings. What Nate Hall has done here is produce a truly beautiful album that touches you, moves you in a way few can achieve – a reminder of what music is really all about.
