Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN RUMORED TO PERFORM WITH SOULSAVERS IN NEW YORK Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan told ConsequenceofSound in a recent interview that there may be a Soulsavers show in late December or January in New York that features a Soulsavers/Mark Lanegan performance. Ziggy Pop: Mark Lanegan / Karen Dalton_2012_"Same Old Man" Label: Light In The Attic – LITA 45 025 Format: Vinyl, 7", Limited Edition, Blue Country: US Released: 11 Nov 2012 Genre: Rock 01 Mark Lanegan - "Same Old Man" (2:46) 02 Karen Dalton - "Same Old Man" (2:45) Celebrating Light In The Attic’s 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7”s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light In The Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side. On this release, Screaming Trees man Mark Lanegan applies his tobacco-flavored tones to ‘Same Old Man’, a traditional made famous by the haunting New York singer-songwriter Karen Dalton. What Dalton achieves with the traditional instruments of America (notably her celebrated banjo) in her 1971 arrangement, Lanegan re-imagines with strings, droning Indian tones, sitars and sub-continent-sized production. A-side is produced by Alain Johannes and recorded at 11 AD, Los Angeles, CA, July 2012 B-side features the original Karen Dalton version as remastered by Dave Cooley for our reissue of her “I’m My Own Time” album from http://lightintheattic.net/releases/776-light-in-the-attic-10-year-anniversary-karen-dalton-same-old-man http://www.discogs.com/Mark-LaneganKaren-Dalton-Same-Old-Man/release/4023106 vinyl 320 http://rusfolder.com/33674816

Ziggy Pop: Mark Lanegan discusses Mad Season and Gutter Twins, releases "Christmas Album" In a new interview, Lanegan discusses releases with Mad Season, Gutter Twins, Duke Garwood, and more. The interview was published in Polish, and is crudely translated into English. Here are some excerpts: - You can tell on what is currently working on, because I know that you do not plan new album with Isobel Campbell, will not you also resulting in pain the new version Queens Of The Stone Age. - Recordings already done a long time ago, but at the beginning of next year will be released at the end of my joint record with Duke Garwood. This fantastically talented British singer, in which I pointed out a long time ago. This is fucking intense live. Besides, you also check it, because it will be with me for the next tour. Like my Belgian friends from Creature With The Atom Brain. - And what about the Gutter Twins? - Ask Greg. I’m ready, but it is currently Dulli playing concerts with Afghan Whigs, maybe go over to a theme the new album. - On the web there are rumors that you sing on the second album, Mad Season. It sounds sensational. - Nah, it’s crap. The thing is: the label is planning to release a special box with the re-edition of “Above” in the next year. For remastered by Mike [McCready] board to be included live recordings, concert DVDs and some rarities. Among other things, three pieces that were written for the second album, but were never recorded vocals for them. I recorded these parties, and I think that came out really well. This is my small tribute to Layne and John [respectively Staley and Baker Saunders, both musicians have died from an overdose of heroin], are no longer with us. ========================== In other Lanegan news, several new releases are for sale on Lanegan’s European tour. Ziggy Pop: Locomotive (lyrics/vocals by Mark Lanegan) Black Book Of Fear (lyrics/vocals by Mark Lanegan) Slip Away (lyrics/vocals by Mark Lanegan) â àïðåëå In 1996, work began on a second Mad Season album with Mike, Barrett and Baker writing and recording the basic tracks for 15 new songs. Unfortunately, because of declining health, Layne wasn’t able to make any of the recording sessions and the album was shelved. Fate subsequently took each musician in a different direction: Mike back to Pearl Jam and Barrett back to Screaming Trees. Tragically, both Baker (1999) and Layne (2002) passed away. In 2012, the two remaining band members, Mike and Barrett, along with Above’s original producer Brett Eliason, convened in Seattle to sift through the original magnetic tapes from that second album’s sessions to revisit the unfinished songs. They called on Mark Lanegan to pen lyrics and sing on 3 of the best of those songs, including one co-written by Peter Buck of REM, which will be featured on the forthcoming reissue honoring the legacy of Layne and Baker. http://www.legacyrecordings.com/a/#/news/legacy-recordings-announces-newly-expanded-deluxe-edition-of-above-the-mythic-debut-sole-studio-album-from-seattle-rock-supergroup-mad-season/68/1/

Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN DISCUSSES NEW QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE ALBUM & SONGWRITING WITH SCREAMING TREES Here are a couple of excerpts from MusicRadar.com‘s new interview with Mark Lanegan On Queens of the Stone Age: “I enjoy working on whatever I’m working on. I definitely enjoy working with Josh, he’s a good friend of mine, he’s another guy I hang out with a lot when I’m not making music. We have a lot of laughs working together, so in that way it is inspiring.” “I sang a little bit on this new record. Josh and I are always doing stuff, but I don’t have a crystal ball, I can’t tell you what the future holds. But I do know that we enjoy working together and we continue to do so.” On his songwriting skills growing during his time with the Screaming Trees: “When I first started writing songs it would be a few words here and there. The guitar player wrote songs and I’d just change some words to make it have some kind of meaning to me because a lot of the stuff he was writing was psychedelia but he had never even tripped on acid so it became real cartoonish. So I had to sing these so I tried to have some sort of meaning to me. Tried and failed, I might add. But by the time we got to the last Trees records I was writing and there was a lot more satisfaction in that. It was a learning curve, when I started I didn’t know anything about music, singing or writing music. It took me a while and I’m still learning.” full interview: Music Radar

Ziggy Pop: Mark Lanegan - on working with Duke Garwood & QotSA, his new 'crooner' album & more In a new interview with Q Magazine, Mark Lanegan discussed his collaborations and what he’s been recently working on. Lanegan talked about the positive experience he had working with Duke Garwood on their recent collaboration album ‘Black Pudding.’ While discussing his collaborations with various artists such as Josh Homme and Greg Dulli, he said that “the music is secondary to our friendship.” Lanegan also revealed that he will be releasing a new album in the fall of this year. On the topic of his new record, Lanegan said: “I wanted to make a record with a crooner-ish type of song, for want of a better term. You know, orchestrated, stuff like Andy Williams or Perry Como would do. I ended-up recording a record like that in February, it’s going to be out in the fall. That was something I wanted to do for years and years.” Lanegan also added: “I do a John Cale song, a Nick Cave song but in that style. It’s called Imitations.” Finally, Lanegan said that he’s been writing songs every day for the next Mark Lanegan Band album. The ‘crooner’ album and the new Mark Lanegan Band album are “all [he has] on the docket” right now. Lanegan recently rumored a two-disc anthology set and a new Gutter Twins album in the future, but the interview made no mention of these projects. Read the rest of the interview at Q Magazine: Q

Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN REVEALS COVERS ALBUM ‘IMITATIONS’ RELEASE DATE, TRACKLIST, AND RELEASES NEW SONG Mark Lanegan announced that he will be releasing his new covers album ‘Imitations’ on September 17, 2013. Lanegan discussed the emotional significance of the album in a statement: “When I was a kid in the late sixties and early seventies, my parents and their friends would play the records of Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, music with string arrangements and men singing songs that sounded sad whether they were or not. At home my folks were also listening to country music, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Vern Gosdin were some of our favorites. For a long time I’ve wanted to make a record that gave me the same feeling those old records did, using some of the same tunes I loved as a kid and some that I’ve loved as I have gotten older. This record is it. Imitations.” ======================== Mark Lanegan has released the first song from ‘Imitations,’ a cover of John Cale’s “I’m Not The Loving Kind.” This sounds different from what Lanegan fans might be used to, but Lanegan’s classic voice pervades throughout and his ambition in trying something new should be celebrated. The tracklist for ‘Imitations’ was also revealed by Lanegan. The album will feature 9 covers and 3 originals: 01. “Flatlands” (Chelsea Wolfe) 02. “She’s Gone” (Hall & Oates) 03. “Deepest Shade” 04. “You Only Live Twice” (Nancy Sinatra) 05. “Pretty Colors” (Frank Sinatra) 06. “Brompton Oratory” (Nick Cave) 07. “Solitaire” 08. “Mack The Knife” (Bobby Darin) 09. “I’m Not The Loving Kind” (John Cale) 10. “Lonely Street” (Patsy Cline) 11. “Elégie Funèbre” (Gérard Manset) 12. “Autumn Leaves” Mark Lanegan will release ‘Imitations’ on September 17, 2013 on Vagrant Records ñëóøàòü: 09. “I’m Not The Loving Kind” (John Cale) https://soundcloud.com/marklanegan/im-not-the-loving-kind

However, it now seems that the rumor was either false or the song titles have changed. It is also interesting to note that the first twenty songs, which feature Lanegan songs that have already been released, are ordered in reverse chronological order except for a reversal in the order of tracks from The Winding Sheet and Whiskey for the Holy Ghost.

Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN ENDS MUSICAL PARTNERSHIP WITH ISOBEL CAMPBELL Nine years after its conception, the musical partnership between Mark Lanegan and Scottish singer Isobel Campbell has come to an end. In a new interview with Transatlantic Modern, Campbell describes her relationship with Lanegan and how their collaboration “turned really sour.” In the interview, Campbell describes the exhaustion that she endured during the duo’s touring. She became upset when “Mark had secretly booked a solo show for himself using [her] guitarist,” and states that a solo tour is better than having to deal with “all the red tape of ‘Can we play these shows?’” In addition, Campbell states that “we couldn’t tour [Ballad of the Broken Seas] because he was in rehab.” Throughout the interview, Campbell voices her displeasure with Lanegan’s grumpiness and unwillingness to play on college radio, on TV, or in-stores. She says that the touring “just didn’t work,” and that “there was no flow.” Campbell will now re-establish herself as a solo artist and is going to write a book. The duo released three collaborative studio albums during their partnership, Ballad of the Broken Seas in 2006, Sunday at Devil Dirt in 2008, and Hawk in 2010.

Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN ON POSSIBILITY OF SCREAMING TREES REUNION When asked about the possibility of a Screaming Trees reunion in a recent Irish Times interview, Mark Lanegan responded: “No, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Not interested. I was excited when the Afghan Whigs got back together. Soundgarden are good friends of mine. I totally get why they’d want to do it. It’s their music, it’s their band. It’s their right to do it. But it’s not something I’m interested in doing with Screaming Trees.”

So, you know, it’s not much fun to discuss that stuff over and over again. That doesn’t happen in Europe. I think a lot of people that listen to my music over there might not even be aware of the Screaming Trees. In fact, I know that’s true. It’s not like I’m ashamed of it, but it’s like talking about that year of kindergarten over and over again. It was a learning experience, and that’s about it.” Exclaim interview

This new album, Tess, proves from the first sly, seductive note that you'll be powerless to resist the charms of this barroom-prowling troubadour. Pickerel roams the treacherous terrain of romance like its the Wild West. Tess is tumbleweed noir - a dusky landscape littered with empty bottles and broken dreams, where bedrooms are ghost towns and love - while not exactly a battlefield - could easily land you in a jail cell. Tess is an album full of last waltzes for last call - impure siren songs, if you will. A seductive invitation to not play it safe. Mark Pickerel has long been one of the more interesting and eclectic talents in the Pacific Northwest, drumming for the Screaming Trees and the grunge power trio Truly, a session musician for the likes of Brandi Carlile and Neko Case, and stepping into the spotlight as lead vocalist in his own bands, the Dark Fantastic and his new group, “His Praying Hands.” On “Tess,” Pickerel’s first album since 2008’s “Cody’s Dream,” Pickerel’s voice is soaked in moody regret, a sinuous baritone that somehow manages to make lost love sound more enticing than the kind that lasts. In Pickerel’s hands, love gone wrong certainly results in more intriguing songs, as in “Your Wild West,” which seems to channel the loping stride of the Doors’ “People Are Strange.” Pickerel, who sings and plays acoustic guitar, has more than a little of the Doors’ Jim Morrison in him, in both his vocal delivery and the wry playfulness of his lyrics (“We build the traps like working rats/They build their fortunes on our backs”). His musicians provide suitably atmospheric alt-country backing on Pickerel’s lost highway ramblings.

Ziggy Pop: MARK LANEGAN: “I’M STARTING THE FOLLOW-UP TO BLUES FUNERAL” In a new interview with MOJO Magazine, Mark Lanegan discusses writing his new Mark Lanegan Band album, his latest covers album Imitations, Lou Reed, doing voice-overs for athletic underwear commercials, why he hates interviews, and more. Lanegan stated that after playing an acoustic tour, he will resume playing with the Mark Lanegan Band and that “[he's] starting the follow-up to Blues Funeral in January.” Lanegan says that the Mark Lanegan Band did not really fit the music of Imitations, which included cover versions of Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin songs, and that instead he has been touring in “classier, mellow settings.” On the passing of Lou Reed, Lanegan stated: “I don’t think I’ve cried about someone passing away who I had never met since I was a kid and John Lennon died.” On a lighter note, Lanegan stated that he was recently hired to do voiceovers: “a recent one (chuckles) was for athletic underwear.” The singer also added that after Joy Division/New Order’s Peter Hook followed him on Twitter, he “ran around the house like a little girl. I told my girlfriend, check it out, bitches! It’s the shit man, they’re the forefathers.” The new interview is available to read in MOJO Magazine‘s latest issue. http://www.mojo4music.com

The former frontman of Screaming Trees, collaborator with Kurt Cobain and Queens Of The Stone Age, half of a modern day Nancy & Lee with Isobel Campbell and, most commonly, solo artist, Lanegan is a man whose career has been defined by an unwillingness to sit still. Light In The Attic are set to shine a spotlight on this great American performer and songwriter with the release of Has God Seen My Shadow? An Anthology 1989-2011. Collecting Lanegan’s solo material for Sub Pop, Beggars and more plus 12 unreleased tracks, this is the archive treatment Mark has long deserved. It is released in two sumptuous formats: a Double-CD edition with a gatefold, tip-on jacket and a 44-page booklet comprising hand-written lyrics and rare archive photos by Charles Peterson and Steve Gullick, and a Triple-LP box set, each LP in single pocket jackets within a heavy, tip-on slip case, with a 20-page book featuring the same attention to detail and extras as the CD release. The 32 tracks shine a light on Mark’s rare talent, and span the singer’s entire career, from 1990’s debut album The Winding Sheet to a treasure trove of recent unreleased gems and feature such guests as PJ Harvey, Josh Homme and J Mascis. His is a sound of grizzled vocals and dark melody, its lyrics chiseled out of late night thoughts and dark humor.
