Ziggy Pop: Soundgarden is "ready to kick it up a notch, sonically" as it heads into the studio next week to start work on its first new studio album in a decade and a half Drummer Matt Cameron tells Billboard.com that "there's a little bit of evolution going on with some of this new music, but we're not straying too far from the formula. It has all our signature elements -- and more. I think people are going to really love it." Cameron says that after reuniting in 2010 for a few shows, including Lollapalooza, and the release of the "Telephantasm" compilation, Soundgarden got together in early December to "see if we could actually get the old juices flowing again. Lo and behold, we were able to write a bunch of really cool songs, and I think we're at the stage now where we want to just put them onto tape, or ProTools, and take it from there." The writing session generated 12-14 songs that Cameron says "are kind of ready to go," but he also expects that "once we get into a studio environment, we'll come up with new ideas and rearrange what we have." The existing songs, he says, are "about 90 percent new," but some draw on ideas that date as far back as 1996's "Down on the Upside," as well as some riffs he wrote around 2008. "We've tried to update the super-old stuff," he says. "It doesn't sound too old and dusty and crusty to my ears -- but maybe to someone else it will. I think guitar-based music is not really as popular as it has been in the past, so it might sound kind of out of date or out of tune with what's going on right now. Or it might be a breath of fresh air to have an unabashedly loud guitar band out there." Well before a new album comes out, however, Soundgarden will deliver "Live on I-5" on March 22, the group's first official concert album that was recorded during West Coast dates on its final tour in 1996. The set includes favorites such as "Spoonman," "Rusty Cage," "Fell on Black Days" and "Black Hole Sun," as well as covers of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" and the Stooges' "Search & Destroy." "Pretty soon after we got home from that tour we broke up," Cameron says, "so those tapes were just collecting dust. Once we got them out and we listened to them, we realized we had a pretty cool record that we could certainly include in our relaunching of the catalog." "Live on I-5" will give the group a bit of a buffer for making its new album, and Cameron says Soundgarden has no desire to rush anything into the world. The group does hope "to do some (live) playing this summer, for sure," but no dates are in place yet. And Soundgarden will also be competing with frontman Chris Cornell's solo tour, which kicks off April 1 in Austin, Texas, and Cameron's obligations to Pearl Jam as it celebrates its 20th anniversary with some expected festival-style performances in the fall and continues work on its own new album. "We just have to take (Soundgarden) one step at a time," Cameron says. "I think we just naturally decided to play music together again because that's what we enjoyed the most. It's still kind of a natural band. Ziggy Pop: Soundgarden To Enter Studio Next Week The reunited Soundgarden plan to enter a Seattle-area studio in about a week or so, with producer Adam Kasper (who worked on Soundgarden’s last LP, 1996’s Down On The Upside) to begin recording their new album. Frontman Chris Cornell tell "Spin" magazine that the band plans to spend as much time as it takes to “make an album that we all really love. We don’t have a schedule. It’s not like we are going to go into the studio and come out when we’re finished with an album.” Cornell also explained that there will be more shows in 2011. “We plan on playing shows for sure — that’s never been in question,” Cornell said. “Then when we have some time again we’ll get back into the studio.” The singer also said that they want the recording process to be as chilled out as possible. “The main thing that got in the way of us wanting to be in Soundgarden is that long cycle of write, record, promote, release, tour — then do it all over again,” said Cornell. “It all fit into a schedule and Soundgarden came completely from indie roots. We were a Do It Yourself band that became part of a bigger picture. But we’re being really carefully now to do this on our own time. We’re doing things at a pace that’s comfortable for everybody.”

Philosopher: Вряд ли Кэмерон вернется в Саундгарден. Джемы новый альбом кстати тоже пишут по-тихоньку, но сначала летом у Веддера сольный тур.

Ziggy Pop: [перенесено] SOUNDGARDEN Working On 'Very Diverse' New Album Reunited grunge legends SOUNDGARDEN entered singer Chris Cornell's studio in Los Angeles earlier in the month to begin recording their first album in 15 years. Cornell tells Billboard.com in a new interview, "We're pretty far into our record now. I don't really know how to describe it musically, because typically with SOUNDGARDEN... every time we write a song we always take it for what it is and try to make it the most it can be. It's very diverse, I can tell you that." Cornell says that that unlike the old days when the band was on a constant schedule of recording and touring, they're working in a much more relaxed way now. "We went into this with the idea that we wouldn't worry about scheduling or timing," Cornell explains to Billboard.com. "We would worry about making a great record; that's kind of where we're at. It's been a pretty fast pace, considering everything. We've really gotten very far very quickly, and it's really exciting. But we're not putting any pressure on ourselves or around the music and just want it to organically be finished without being concerned that, 'Oh, we have to master this on this specific date.' We're not in a situation where we have to rush, and this is one time we're lucky enough that we can afford to...let the album decide when it's done." Adam Kaspar, who co-produced SOUNDGARDEN's last record, 1996's "Down On The Upside", is working with the group on the new effort as well. SOUNDGARDEN reunited in January 2010 but has only played a handful of gigs — including a headlining set at last August's Lollapalooza festival in Chicago — and issued a compilation titled "Telephantasm" last fall. The band's first live album, called "Live On I5", came out on March 22 and was recorded on one of their final tours. Cornell, who's going out on a solo acoustic tour this spring, told Spin that SOUNDGARDEN will play more live shows this year. Cornell says it's difficult to compare the sound of the new album to any of Soundgarden's past work. "When you have a band that does 'Jesus Christ Pose' and 'Black Hole Sun' and everything in the middle, one bridging to the other, it's sort of hard to say, 'Well, this sounds like that,'" he says. "There's a lot of things that don't sound like anything we've ever done, but that was always the case. We always were constantly reinventing how we wrote and recorded from one song to the next, literally." On touring and Matt Cameron (Hilarious) Pearl Jam are planning a big festival in the late summer to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Drummer Matt Cameron divides his time between the two bands, so it makes sense that Soundgarden might get invited to play too. "I haven't heard anything about that," says Cornell. "Whether it makes sense or not depends on if you're Matt. He might not want to get carpal tunnel syndrome." A dream for fans would be a reunion of the early Nineties grunge supergroup Temple of the Dog, which also featured Cameron on drums. "We could also get Matt to play in a few other bands," laughs Cornell. "He could just play until basically he has to go to the hospital."

Ziggy Pop: a new interview with Kim Thayil in Guitar Player, and some cool little bits inside about the new LP There are some things that sound similar in a sense to Down on the Upside, so it's kind of like picking up where we left off. There are some heavy moments, and there are some fast songs. Guitar players might recognize some of the tunings, but not droppedЃ]D. Frankly, it seems very pedestrian now, and it bores me. I don't want to make that power chord with my one finger on the fifth and sixth strings anymore. I've become very comfortable with C, G, D, G, G, E [low to high]. That's a progression from the openЃ]CЃ]based tunings we developed on Superunknown and modified on Down on the Upside. There is also some material going in new directions, and there are some slightly different elements. I don't know how to address that specifically. I will say that Chris tracked a mandolin part last night. Rest assured though, it was more in a Zeppelin way than a Renaissance way. Ziggy Pop: Soundgarden Aiming For Early 2012 Release Date For New Album According to an interview Seattleweekly.com recently conducted with Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil; the band are aiming for an early 2012 release date for their new album. Speaking on the timeline for the new outing, Thayil offered: “There’s no timeline, except that our target—roughly—is early 2012. We are focused on this tour and these shows and we have a few dates in October, but in the interim, we’ll do some studio work. We have a few more guitars to do and some vocals. And some of the songs are still being arranged. We want to make sure it’s absolutely the most satisfying for us, and put the best foot forward that we can put. I would assume our fans will also get into it then.”

Ziggy Pop: KIM THAYIL TALKS MORE ABOUT SOUNDGARDEN’S NEW ALBUM - Are you writing together? - Yeah. There’s individual compositions, certainly. Chris has done very well over the years writing solo compositions, where he’s writing the music and lyrics. He brings it to the band, and we twist it around and add our flavor to it. But there’s also collaborative songs on this. I think probably one of the earliest… I can’t really speculate, but if things are going the way we’ve been talking, one of the earliest songs we release will be a collaboration where we all wrote. It came about out of an idea of Matt’s. We all contributed some music, Chris came up with the lyrics afterwards. It’s funny you should bring up that ambient, psychedelic stuff. That goes back to the conversation about the Beatles, where I liked the heavy and fast, and that sort of psychedelic element, that dark psychedelia is certainly present in some of the early records of Boris, and Sunn O))), and bands like Om. You get the heavy, you get the trippy. It’s excellent.

Ziggy Pop: CHRIS CORNELL TALKS ABOUT HIS REASON BEHIND DOING SONGBOOK ACOUSTIC TOURS USA Today The acoustic approach: On the live album, fans will find covers of Led Zeppelin’s Thank You and John Lennon’s Imagine alongside renditions of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun and Audioslave’s Like a Stone, as well as Cornell’s most recent single, The Keeper, which he wrote for the Gerard Butler film Machine Gun Preacher. The inspiration for an acoustic tour started about four years ago. “I did an acoustic show in Stockholm that was recorded and I didn’t know it. By the time I got back to the U.S., it was playing on the radio and people were telling me that they wanted more of that from me,” he says. “I’d done a few one-off acoustics, but I could never get in the rhythm of it, so I decided to commit myself to a full tour. That experience so far has transcended all my expectations.” Re-creating his classics: “Over the years, playing songs again and again revealed their potential in an acoustic setting,” he says. “During rehearsals, I don’t do vocal warm-ups, they don’t take me where I need to be before a show, so that’s how I came up with the unplugged versions of my rock songs. There are songs like Black Hole Sun that aren’t that much of a stretch, there are others that take a lot of performance before I find the right fit. Some songs I just gave up on, some I played 100 times (before I had) a revelation how to play them, and then there are some that I had never done live and I discover through rehearsal. I have such a wealth of material. Riotous album opener and first single “Been Away Too Long” finds Soundgarden back at it with a double-edged blast of homecoming celebration and urban angst. King Animal can be explosive, as in “Blood On The Valley Floor,” nightmarish (“Worse Dreams”) or wistful (“Halfway There”), leading us through changing sonic landscapes that can embrace both the jazz inflections of “Black Saturday” and the feral rocker “Attrition,” with compelling lyrics by bassist Ben Shepherd. The subject matter is broad – Kim Thayil’s lyrics for “Non-State Actor” are a sharp and cynical take on the powers behind political thrones, while Cornell’s bruised and introspective “Bones of Birds” explores the terrors and vulnerabilities of parenthood. The band co-produced their sixth studio album with longtime Soundgarden friend and producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Pearl Jam) and recorded at Studio X in Seattle. King Animal was mixed by Joe Barresi (The Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool) in Pasadena, California.

Ziggy Pop: MATT CAMERON’S SUPERGROUP “DRUMGASM” RELEASING DEBUT The drummer of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, Matt Cameron, has been recording for an all-drummer trio supergroup titled “Drumgasm.” The other members include Janet Weiss and Zach Hill. Weiss is currently the drummer for Quasi and Wild Flag and is also known from the female-lead alternative rock group, Sleater-Kinney. Hill is known for his two bands: Hella, considered to be a mix of math and noise rock, and Death Grips, an experimental hip hop group. Their debut LP will be available on August 27th and apparently has two tracks that are 20 minutes long.

Ziggy Pop: SOUNDGARDEN PLAY “THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE” FOR THE FIRST TIME IN JUST RELEASED 90′S REHEARSAL CLIP Soundgarden uploaded audio onto Youtube Sunday and Soundcloud (4 days ago) of the band hashing out their classic “The Day I Tried To Live” in a 90′s rehearsal. It’s a rare glimpse into the band’s songwriting process with Chris Cornell outlining the song’s arrangement before they attempt to play it apparently for the first time. 1994′s “The Day I Tried to Live” was the second single from the Soundgarden’s fourth studio album, Superunknown. The song peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 25 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart almost 20 years ago.
Ziggy Pop: SOUNDGARDEN SET TO PLAY ‘SUPERUNKNOWN’ FRONT TO BACK AT SXSW ITUNES FESTIVAL Soundgarden have just announced they will perform their Superunknown album in its entirety March 13th when they headline the iTunesMusic Festival during South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. This announcement comes 1 day after Soundgarden announced the ‘Superunknown’ 20th Anniversary Deluxe and Super Deluxe reissues will be released June 3rd. Soundgarden will also release a set of five 10-inch singles on vinyl for “Spoonman,” “Fell on Black Days,” “Black Hole Sun,” “The Day I Tried to Live” and “My Wave” on April 19th as part of Record Store Day. The vinyl singles will also feature B-sides found on the anniversary set of ‘Superunknown’.
