Zero: Interview with Jack Gulick - Part 3 SP.com: How involved was the band in the production and direction of the DVD? JG: The band set out the agenda in the first meeting, and we basically stuck to that plan all the way through. We had excellent access to shooting, with little or no interference from the band, or the tour crew. Everyone involved gave the cameras as much leeway as we needed. Only the need for sleep prevented the crew from shooting more footage. In post-production, Billy and Jimmy hand picked the music for the Concert DVD, but gave us the freedom to cut the Documentary as we saw fit. Later, Billy gave us a few notes, mostly having to do with keeping the story accurate and honest; he was less concerned with looking good or bad than he was with making sure a scene was truthful and correct. He also wrote a custom score for the final Documentary to add a sense of light heartedness to some scenes, or irony and foreboding to others. Everything was about driving the emotional story around the music. SP.com: Shifting now to the more technical side of things, how was the audio for the DVD recorded? JG: The Documentary audio was recorded to the cameras, while the Concert audio was recorded to 24-bit 96k Digital drives; the best way that can be recorded right now. Every show and every soundcheck was recorded. SP.com: When you say "every show" was recorded, what do you mean? JG: We shot the Documentary in and around all the shows in Asheville and San Francisco. We also shot 5 nights in San Francisco for the Concert DVD that we thought would allow us to get enough of the new songs that had been created to present as an entirely new body of work created in this "art installation" setting. The project was a large undertaking, but the band and the Documentary crew agreed, right from the start, that extensive coverage of EVERYTHING, from beginning to end, would afford us tremendous freedom in the edit room to create a complete statement. We shot over 300 hours of Documentary footage, and another 300 hours of Concert footage if you add up the footage from all the separate cameras. It took the Edit assistant, Mike, 6 months just to digitize and log all the Documentary footage, while in another edit room, a team worked on the Concert Footage.

Andy: Zero пишет: e also wrote a custom score for the final Documentary Было б круто, если это что-то совсем свежее.

Ziggy Pop: хм...

Zero: Interview with Jack Gulick - Part 4 SP.com: One of the cool features of the Residency shows was how the band worked in new songs every night. How will this be reflected in the DVD? JG: The Documentary carefully reveals new songs being created in the morning, rehearsed that afternoon, and being performed that night, or the next night. Often, the songs were performed before they even had a name. The Concert DVD, on the other hand, shows the new songs in a much more refined state as they became part of the new language of the band. In essence, you can see the music created in the Documentary DVD and the full length performances in the Concert DVD.( SP.com: As someone who was there at every moment, are there any stories from the Residencies you can share with, any moments when things came together in the midst of chaos? JG: The day we were loading in to the Fillmore in San Francisco to set up the multi-camera rig, it was decided that the band would rehearse in the centre of the floor all afternoon. Even though we were right in the middle of this massive scramble to load in and set up our equipment, we seized the opportunity to shoot the rehearsal. Two of those performances are in the Documentary: "No Surrender" and "99 Floors". We actually pulled the cameras out of their shipping creates, and started shooting immediately, in an effort to not let one minute of performance slip by. It was an astonishing moment of creative energy, and it would have been unforgivable not to capture it. We did not know how special those rehearsal/performances were going to be until we watched them in the edit room.( SP.com: Turning to the DVD itself, what stylistic choices were made with the filming of the concert footage, interviews, or any other footage that made it in specifically for an aesthetic reason? JG- The stylistic concept for the Documentary, right from the onset, was to shoot verite style. The mandate, afterall, was "Get the moment, regardless." The look of the movie was loosely derived from Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls, the ground-breaking underground art film that was shot on two separate cameras at the same time in black and white, and color, sometimes having the shots related, sometimes juxtaposing completely unrelated scenes against each other. Chelsea Girls was shown on two projectors side by side at the same time. From that inspiration, I created the look for the Pumpkins' DVD: several split screen images in black and white and color, sometimes the same shot on two cameras, sometime fully unrelated images that work together to express a third meaning that a single image could not. There is a lot to look at at any one moment, and lots of images are tucked in the Documentary that you may not notice the first, or even second time. The juxtapositions are for the viewer to interpret in their own way. So you could say it is "Documentary, and impressionistic".
