Interview with Jack Gulick - Part 1 A few weeks ago, in anticipation of the Pumpkins' upcoming DVD release, If All Goes Wrong (November 11th, 2008), SP.com connected with the project's director and producer, Jack Gulick, to talk about the Pumpkins' first full-length live performance release since 1994's Vieuphoria (re-released in 2002 on DVD). SP.com: What other projects have you worked on prior to this project with the Pumpkins? JG: Documentaries, mainly about artists in music, dance, or live performance, live music concerts for TV and film, along with lots of other side adventures in music video. SP.com: How did you get connected with the band? Were they drawn to you, you to them, or a bit of both? JG: We heard that the Pumpkins had begun to do live performances again in Europe, along with rumors that these Residencies were about to start, so we made arrangements to meet with Billy and Jimmy to present a plan to make a DVD encompassing the "New Vision" for the band. In that meeting, Billy and Jimmy seemed interested, but, as we came to expect from then on, they upped the stakes and challenged us to "go there", "to get it right", "to be honest", "to commit to the whole process", etc. With the band, we discussed my documentary and live music background, and Dan's live music background, as well as some of the things the band had had on their mind and were looking to have expressed. From this conversation, we agreed that we would shoot every day, from the beginning of the Residencies to the end, and create a verite documentary of the endeavor, filled with new music. And, we fully agreed it had to be honest; we wanted to show the creative process, good or bad, as long as it was truthful. For the musical performances, we agreed to shoot 5 full shows in San Francisco, while we were also shooting the Documentary. From those shows, Billy and Jimmy hand selected the songs that represented the "new work" most accurately for the Concert DVD. The Documentary and the Concert DVDs should really be viewed within a few hours of each other to get the full impact of the concept. SP.com: Did you have any prior knowledge of the band's video history? Was the band's previous video endeavor, Vieuphoria, brought up at any time in early production? Was there any sort of throw back to the themes of this previous video? JG: Yes, we did have an understanding of the band's video history, but felt that the Residencies were a complete enough artistic expression, that to try and capture it fully and completely was the appropriate approach, rather than trying to include too much from what proceeded. Though I should add that the past did seep in a few times, and it is all reported in the movie. Check back each Wednesday leading up to the release of If All Goes Wrong on November 11. Zero: Interview with Jack Gulick - Part 2 SP.com: When was it decided to film these shows of the Residency Tour? JG: We wanted to shoot several full shows and document the happenings around it. It was when we met with the band right in the beginning, in Asheville, that we decided to shoot the Documentary all day, every day, for the entire duration of the Residencies. SP.com: And why focus on these Residencies in particular? JG: We felt that the Residences were going to be an extremely unique period of spontaneous creation, of new music, and of artistic performance and experimentation. We felt right from the onset that these Residencies were as much an art installation as they were a series of concerts. Also, we anticipated capturing the actual moment of creation of some of the new songs. The only way to capture this moment was to record every minute of the entire endeavor. SP.com: You've mentioned that one of the discs is a Documentary. What is the underlying theme being conveyed? JG: The Documentary was a very serious undertaking right from the outset. The goal was to follow the time-honored tradition of capturing everything possible in and around a specific "event". In other words, the goal was to "document" the Residencies properly. Very simply, when we set out, we wanted to create a sort of "American Masters" style work that would properly honor Billy and Jimmy's contribution to American music - to all music for that mater. We also wanted to show the importance of the Residencies as a musical art installation, rather than just a bunch of shows by a newly formed Smashing Pumpkins. We wanted to convey that the new band is now the band, and that the music being created is extremely current and vital. I also wanted to create a permanent document of this powerful, emotional singer, songwriter, and guitar musician, often misunderstood, even sometimes underrated and mistreated by the press, in an honest light. Essentially, I wanted to present a case for the importance of this artist for the long term, and for his willingness to bare it all for the sake of the work. Themes? Hard work, relentless dedication, and obsession with perfection. Check back each Wednesday leading up to the release of If All Goes Wrong on November 11. Zero: Мне очень понравилось видео на Starla !!!!!!!!!! блин сразу все захотелось посмотреть!!!! Пока не могу оценить тот прикол когда видео экран делиться на 4 маленьких окошка!!! непойму нито плохо нито хорошо!!!!! интересно в других песнях также будет??

Согласен, что это не 1992-й и не 1996-й, но Коргану тоже уже не 25, он и не может эту песню играть так же (не в физическом и не техническом плане, конечно же), как тогда. Он повзрослел и отношение к песне у него тоже поменялось. Я считаю, так и должно быть. А идея с поделенным экраном - круть! ПС: Никто нигде не встречал точную дату именно этого исполнения??

Desire: Отрывок порадовал, снято хорошо, а вот идея с разделением экрана спорная, если её использовать в разумном количестве, то лишней она не будет, например, показать гитару в разных ракурсах или барабаны Джимми, когда у этих интсрументов ведущая роль, о5 же, главное не переборщить!
