Ziggy Pop: Crestfallen.com: What is the greatest quality that each of the band members brings to the Smashing Pumpkins? Billy Corgan: Jeff, in many ways, is a far superior guitar player to me. He raises the quality of my playing in order to keep up with him. His integrity level for the pure vision of Smashing Pumpkins is very, very high, very, very high. And he’s a total musicologist, and he gets it, and he really understands where we can still go. He’s probably the number-one person in the band right now who’s saying “We can do this. We can do this.” And believe me, I’m just one guy…there’s a lot of the world, there’s a lot of opinions in the world about a person like me. And sometimes it takes that person inside to go, “You’re doing it, keep going. I believe in you.” I know that may sound insignificant to somebody who’s an asshole, but it means something to me. It means a lot to me that Jeff stood by me through the Fillmore and all the insanity. Notice how we haven’t played San Francisco since, you know what I mean? They’ll never have us back because of those shows. But those shows have everything to do with what’s going on now. We had to die in that show, Jeff with me. He had to bust that guitar… The whole thing was about, “What is this? Who are you people? What are we doing here? What happened to our musical dream? Is this just a joke now?” We had to go through that kind of death together.

Ziggy Pop: “The focus right now is really on the music” October 11, 2011 In a new interview conducted by Andy Downing for Metromix.com, Smashing Pumpkins founder Billy Corgan laments changes to the culture of Chicago (“we had a massive influx of yuppie types—the Starbucks generation”) and expresses surprise at R.E.M.’s recent breakup. Corgan also talked about the Pumpkins’ music, addressing the Gish and Siamese Dream reissues (“both DVD components are from Chicago shows at the Metro”) and welcoming re-evaluations of 1998′s Adore. http://chicago.metromix.com/music/article/local-q-and-a/2860377/content

Ziggy Pop: Adam Graham of the Detroit News, summarizing part of his interview with Billy Corgan: “‘Pisces Iscariot’ is due on Record Store Day in 2012, and the rest of the original band’s material—including a pair of solo acoustic albums Corgan recorded following the breakup of his post-Pumpkins outfit Zwan—are due in late 2012 and 2013.” http://www.detnews.com/article/20111013/ENT04/110130322/Smashing-Pumpkins’-Billy-Corgan-returns-with-more-attitude ============================================= Reclaiming the Smashing Pumpkins http://www.expressmilwaukee.com/article-16394-reclaiming-the-smashing-pumpkins.html

Ziggy Pop: Images and further details on ‘Gish’ and ‘Siamese Dream’ reissues The Amazon listings for deluxe editions of Gish and Siamese Dream posted earlier this week have been updated with additional information and photos. Both are listed at $28.99 and are due out on November 29. Both sets include 2 CDs (one containing the remastered album and the other bonus tracks) and a DVD. The DVDs are to contain complete videos of concerts at Metro in Chicago from 1990 (for Gish) and 1993 (for Siamese Dream). Both sets are also to include postcards; Gish‘s postcards feature six “never-before-seen” band photos, while Siamese Dream‘s feature the original 13 album collages. Finally, both sets feature “reimagined” cover artwork and a 24-page booklet with lyrics and commentary from Billy Corgan and music critic David Wild. Tentative tracklistings for the bonus CDs were given to fans attending a meetup in Los Angeles on October 5. The tracklistings shown to fans in LA reflected 18 tracks for both Gish and Siamese Dream, but according to Amazon, Gish is to have 15 bonus tracks and Siamese Dream 17. UPDATE (10/17): It seems Amazon has pulled both listings for the moment. According to fans who attended a meetup preceding Saturday’s concert in Detroit, the listings were not supposed to appear until later, to coincide with their appearance on band’s official site.

Ziggy Pop: Reissue formats, tracklistings, prices on SmashingPumpkins.com The Smashing Pumpkins’ official website now sports a page devoted to the band’s reissue project. The band is offering multiple formats for the Gish and Siamese Dream reissues, including digital downloads, vinyl, CD, and a 2CD/DVD box set, all of which can be pre-ordered now. The release date is confirmed as November 29. Basic information on the “deluxe edition” boxes matches up with that listed and then delisted on Amazon over the weekend. To recap, each set is priced at $30 and contains the remastered album on one CD, a second CD of bonus tracks, and one DVD, plus extensive liner notes and postcards. Each DVD features the band performing live at Chicago’s Metro: the band’s August 25, 1990 show figures on the Gish disc while the Siamese Dream DVD has the August 14, 1993 show. The Gish bonus CD contains these 18 tracks (* = previously released): Starla (2011 mix) | Siva (Peel session) * | Honeyspider (Reel Time demos / 2011 mix) | Hippy Trippy (Crush Music Box demo) | Snail (live radio performance) | Plume (2011 mix) | Bury Me (Reel Time demos / 2011 mix) | Daydream (Old House demo) | Tristessa (Sub Pop single / 2011 mix) | Girl Named Sandoz (Peel session) * | Jesus Is The Sun (Apartment demo) | Blue (Gish sessions demo) | Smiley (Gish sessions demo) | I Am One (Reel Time demos / 2011 mix) | Seam (Suffer / Apartment demo) | La Dolly Vita (2011 mix) | Pulseczar (Gish sessions demo) * | Drown (alternate guitar solo) Eighteen tracks also make up the Siamese Dream bonus disc: Pissant (siamese sessions rough mix) | Siamese Dream (broadway rehearsal demo) | STP (rehearsal demo) | Frail and Bedazzled (soundworks demo) | Luna (apartment demo) | Quiet (bbc session/bc mix) | Moleasskiss (soundworks demo) | Hello Kitty Kat (soundworks demo) | Today (broadway rehearsal demo) | Never Let Me Down Again (bbc session) * | Apathy’s Last Kiss (siamese sessions rough mix) | Ache (silverfuck rehearsal demo) | U.S.A. (soundworks demo) | U.S.S.R (soundworks demo) | Spaceboy (acoustic mix) | Rocket (rehearsal demo) | Disarm (acoustic mix) | Soma (instrumental mix) For $15, fans can purchase the remastered albums alone, with no bonus tracks, on CD. The remastered albums will also be available on 180-gram vinyl, again with no bonus tracks; Gish vinyl is priced at $23 while the 2LP Siamese Dream is $28. Also on offer are digital download packages for each album and its accompanying bonus tracks. Downloaders must choose between “premium digital” and “high-fidelity digital” options: Premium digital gives you a choice of Apple Lossless, FLAC or 320 kbps MP3. High-Fidelity digital offers source files in 24-bit/96kHz WAV format. Fans also must choose to download either the album plus bonus tracks or the album alone. (Our previous reporting indicates there will be no download option for the DVD contents.) Pricing for the downloads ranges from $12 for the remastered album alone in premium digital up to $28 for the album and bonus tracks in high-fidelity digital. Fans who eschew other retailers and purchase any of the reissues through the Pumpkins’ website will receive one extra downloadable track, an instrumental take on “Frail and Bedazzled.” Two items offered for free on the site are these poetic musings from Billy Corgan: Recorded in 1990 and 1991, ‘Gish’ represents our first foray into the deep waters of rock and roll. In the music within, I still hear our naivete and fresh spirits asking to be heard, and I miss the times that helped make this music so earnest. In 1992, with the weight of a perceived world on our shoulders, we disappeared into a parking garage to write the songs that would change the course of our lives forever. ‘Siamese Dream’ represents all of our dreams coming true, while the dreams of a happy band fell apart.
