Ziggy Pop: Corgan hypes ‘Oceania’ in blog entry Smashing Pumpkins chieftain Billy Corgan, in an Internet posting today, has opined on the high quality of and pure motivations behind his band’s forthcoming record Oceania. Bass and drum parts for the record are both “complex,” Corgan claims, and they will underpin “some really inventive, progressive, and flat-out cool guitar stuff.” As for the songwriting, he says: Putting myself back into ‘album thinking’ as opposed to ‘song at a time thinking’ has pushed me to write some really strong songs that fit together as a whole. I know I am prone to grandiose hyperbole at times but I feel this is as strong a batch of Pumpkins songs as I have written for a very, very long time. …or at least since the “10 to 15 songs that are super-top-level” that he pushed “up to the front of the line” for Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, i.e., the most recently released batch of Pumpkins songs. (We do know he is prone to grandiose hyperbole at times!) Corgan also seems no longer to consider 2011 as “a make-or-break year,” “like in ’92,” in which his band needs “to create an artistic body of work that will lend credibility to everything else” or else be “dead in the water.” Instead, come what will: 20 years ago…success was measured for me on someone else’s value system, and not my own. I was willing then to willingly submit myself to that system to get what I wanted, which was frankly to be heard. Ahh, the wonderful, vain dreams of a young man. I am lucky now to be surrounded by so much love and support in the group and in my life. Whatever comes as the result of this union is far better in my eyes now than chasing that old kind of success, for to me that type of success gained at such a high cost would no longer be success at all. http://glittercop.blogspot.com/2011/06/from-william-patrick-corgan.html

Ziggy Pop: Back in early April 2011 WPC had mentioned to me that he was working on a new song called “Pale Horse” He also recently mentioned to all his Facebook friends the following: “worked long and hard on the title track ‘oceania’ today…it’s a long song, in two distinct parts, and we’ve spent days arranging and re-arranging it till we have gotten it just right. we are working really well together right now. reminds me of what is right about being in a good band”

Ziggy Pop: Fiorentino completes bass tracks for ‘Oceania’ Smashing Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino has finished recording her bass parts for the band’s in-progress record Oceania, tweeting tonight that “It’s a wrap.” Guitar and vocal work for the album remains to be completed. Fiorentino’s partner in the Pumpkins’ rhythm section, drummer Mike Byrne, finished recording his parts on June 3. Byrne completed 13 drum tracks, but it’s not clear from public statements for how many songs Fiorentino laid down bass. Fiorentino recently acknowledged that she and other band members spent time with bandleader Billy Corgan in Arizona as he wrote some of the music for Oceania. She had been present in the studio since the start of recording in early May, allowing Byrne to track live with her and Corgan. Fiorentino began laying down her final bass tracks on June 2, focusing on “getting a unique bass sound that will ring through the big wall [of guitars].” She believes her parts will be highlighted in the mix. Before June 7 Fiorentino had completed work on two songs, and a third, “My Love is Winter,” was finished that day. She said on June 8 she was working on “Special K”; the same day, Corgan mentioned that Fiorentino was at work on “Helios,” a title that did not appear on the draft tracklist for Oceania that Corgan had tweeted a week earlier…are they the same song? Corgan himself spent June 8 working on a brand new song entitled “Pretty Boy.” On June 9, Fiorentino recorded bass for “The Chimera.” June 10 she was on to “Glissandra,” while Corgan experimented with a new pedal. For June 11, Fiorentino’s task was “Violet Rays,” which is apparently a heart-breaker, more than likely the love song she referenced back in May. June 14, she worked on “Quasar“; June 16, she finished up “Pale Horse,” a song about Corgan’s mother that can be heard in the background of this video from the studio. On June 18, Fiorentino tracked bass for “Pinwheels.” On June 21, Fiorentino finished the song “Oceania” and Corgan said she had “only one more song to go.” Byrne and Fiorentino are expected to record backing vocals at the end of the process — which continues following the arrival of Jeff Schroeder (the guitar “army”?) in Chicago on June 13 to begin working with Corgan on precisely 1,000 overdubs.
